Screening of "J. Fred Woell: An American Vision" / Wednesday, April 18 / @ MassArt

Join us for the Boston Premiere of J. Fred Woell: An American Vision at the Design and Media Center, sponsored by the Society of Arts + Crafts and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in collaboration with Kane-Lewis Productions.

A new documentary film directed by Richard Kane, J. Fred Woell: An American Vision celebrates the pioneering metal artist who created work with wit, satire, and meaning. Woell is legendary in the metalsmithing community, best known for his playful pins, pendants, and sculptures that draw on pop culture, found toys, and other objects.

This screening, which marks the film’s Boston premiere, will be followed by a Q+A panel featuring: Richard Kane, director/producer; Claire Sanford, former student and Haystack Trustee; Susan H. Hamlet, retired Professor of Artisanry Jewelry/Metals at UMass Dartmouth; Alan Burton Thompson, Associate Professor of Jewelry/Metals in the Artisanry program at UMass Dartmouth; and MassArt Jewelry and Metalsmithing Professor Heather White.

Metalwerx Earring Workshop / Thursday, May 10 / @ 100 Pier 4

A collaboration between SA+C and Metalwerx, this fun and fast paced workshop will cover two techniques for creating silver earrings that are simple to make and striking to wear. The evening will begin with demonstrations on how to create links for two classic chain styles that will be adapted into a variety of earrings designs. Students will learn some metalsmithing basics including forming, texturing, and finishing sterling silver. Wrap up the evening by discovering how to create ear wires in order to bring (or wear) two new pairs of earrings!

Mosaic Jewelry Workshop with Michel L'Huillier / Saturday, May 12 / @ 100 Pier 4

During this 2 hour class, Michel will guide students through the creative and technical process of making a mini mosaic pendant. Choosing from a wide selection of precut glass, beads, and metal pendants supplied by the instructor, students will bring their unique designs to life by learning how to place and glue their mosaic designs to the metal pendant and, finally, grout and clean their pieces to reveal the finished products. Black leather cord necklaces will be provided for each pendant.

Basketmaker Lynne Francis-Lunn joins us for a gallery talk in conjunction with National Basketry Organization presents All Things Considered 9. Her eye-catching and mind-blowing work weaves hand-painted paper to create delightful and complex forms in her basketry. Lynne will give insight to her work as well as share thoughts on the rest of the exhibition.

Join us for a demonstration of basketweaving by three members of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild. Peggy Thrasher, Debra Rolfe, and Beverly Shafner will demonstrate basketweaving techniques and answer questions about materials, history, and basketweaving opprotunities for all. Join acclaimed basketmaker Lois Russell for a gallery talk in conjunction with National Basketry Organization presents All Things Considered 9. You'll get a chance to see the exhibition through Lois' eyes as she shares about her career, experience, and work in this juried exhibition.
As a long-time maker and teacher, Lois will walk us through the exhibition and talk about the other pieces on exhibit, including introducing us to many makers and their various materials and techniques. This show is great fun, and Lois will help us tease out nuances in contemporary basketry.

Art Baskets: Breaking Boundaries Join Pat Hickman for the Closing Lecture of All Things Considered 9 on view at the Society of Arts and Crafts through Saturday, June 9. All exhibitions are free + open to the public.
It’s impossible to understand contemporary basketry without knowing of its beginnings in Berkeley, California in the 1970s. Pat Hickman is delighted to have the opportunity to remind us of the long term impact on the field by artists Ed Rossbach, Lillian Elliott, Joanne Segal Brandford and others.
